All You Need To Know About the Parents and Grandparents Program

Are you a permanent citizen of Canada? Do you want your parents or grandparents living in other countries move to your country and attain Canadian citizenship? If so, then the Canadian government has a plan for you. It is the Parents and Grandparents program issued by the government.

With the help of this migration program, you can sponsor your senior family members to move to your country and apply for Canadian citizenship. However, you need to meet specific eligibility criteria for supporting your parents or grandparents to move to your country and be a permanent resident.

Eligibility Criteria for this Scheme:

To sponsor your parents and grandparents to move to Canada under the parents and grandparents scheme, you need to meet the below-mentioned criteria:

  • Be a Canadian citizen and a permanent resident of Canada. You can also be a registered Indian under the Canadian Indian Act
  • You must be at least 18 years or older
  • You must be residing in Canada to sponsor your family members
  • You must exceed the minimum necessary income set for this Parents and Grandparents program. You also need to provide proof of your income to the Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC)
  • You need to sign an agreement stating that you will financially support your sponsored person for the next 20 years. You also need to agree that you will repay any social assistance benefits paid to the family members you are sponsoring for 20 years.

Minimum Income that You Need to Have

To sponsor your senior family members and bring them to live in Canada, the IRCC sets a minimum income requirement that you must meet. This income requirement is set to ensure that with your income, you can support yourself, your family, and those you are sponsoring.

If your income is less than this minimum necessary income set by the IRCC, you will be ineligible to sponsor your senior family members to attain Canadian citizenship.

The Super Visa System:

You can also sponsor your parents and grandparents with the help of the Super Visa System. The Super Visa allows the parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens to visit their families without renewing their visas for the next five consecutive years.

Besides, by using the Super Visa, the parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens can enter Canada multiple times, up to the next ten years.

The Eligibility Criteria for using the Super Visa System:

To be eligible for a super visa, an applicant needs to be a parent or grandparent of a Canadian citizen. If you are an applicant and your child or grandchild will be sponsoring you, you must receive a written letter that includes:

  • A promise of financial support for as long as you will be in their country
  • A list containing the number of people in this person’s house
  • A copy of the sponsor’s Canadian citizenship and permanent resident documentation
