PR Card Renewal

PR Card Renewal

The expiration of PR status is nothing new. In case it happens to you, try to remain calm. The expiry of your PR card does not affect your PR status. You will continue to have PR until the formal cancellation procedure begins. You need to understand the specifics based on your issue –

  • If the PR Card has already expired
  • Your present location, whether inside or outside of Canada
  • Have you been inside Canada for at least 730 days in the past five years?

PR Card and PR status

The PR Card and PR status can cause considerable ambiguity for many individuals. The PR card is merely a kind of identification that confirms to the Canadian government that you are a legal PR holder. Your permanent resident status will remain valid even if your PR card does not. If you lose your PR Card and currently do not possess it, you will need a PR Travel Document to reenter Canada.

A new PR card application must be submitted if the previous one has expired. When your PR Card expires, you must apply for a PR Travel Document if you are outside of Canada. If you fail to do so, the IRCC will initiate the process of removing your PR Status, at which point you will be required to submit a Residency Appeal.

Documents You Need to Submit

Proof of residency is required. Two years of continuous residence in Canada within the past five years must be demonstrated during the application assessment. If you have not lived in Canada for at least two years in the past five years, the government will start revoking your PR status. If the IRCC has informed you that you are inadmissible to Canada because you do not meet the residence requirement, you may appeal to the IAD within 30 days of receiving notice of the revocation decision. It may take up to 1.5 years to file the appeal.
